An Invonvenient Truth in the World.... of Warcraft
Submitted by Jack Jagla on Mon, 04/06/2009 - 14:291) What would you do to improve Kevin’s study?
His methods varied too much between males and females. His single trial with a male character clearly deviates from the much more in depth approach he took with female characters. Although he might have past experiences that prove males get less gold when begging, he must use proper research methods to document this phenomenon. He would have to take his clothes off and converse with his male character similar to his method with the female characters.

Kevin's Study
Submitted by arimiller89 on Mon, 04/06/2009 - 14:241) What would you do to improve Kevin’s study?
I thought that the qualitative parts of Kevin's study should have been more clearly explained. Since his exact experiences with each individual cannot be reproduced, the situations that he chose to describe should have been more detailed than what he gave.
2) How would you improve the organization of Kevin’s study?
If the assignment was to be more scientific, I would have separated the study into an IMRAD format.
Spare some gold?
Submitted by carl.adcock on Sun, 04/05/2009 - 23:081) What would you do to improve Kevin’s study?
I noticed he was lacking in one aspect of his research, it seems for his trial with the male character he only used the simple "Could you please spare me some gold?" but with the female trials he took their clothes off, danced, and flirted with the other players. Kevin should do more trials with a male character (because one male of one race is not very conclusive) but instead of just asking for gold, he should try conversing with the other players then asking for the gold.

Major Cities or Ghost Towns?
Submitted by austin.orphan on Thu, 04/02/2009 - 00:37Some major cities in the World of Warcraft always have tons of players interacting while others simply died out or have never really been of use to players. Today we set out to research what separates a functioning city to a ghost town. Thunder Bluff, the home of the Tauren, is relatively dead, with a max of 11 players during peak hours. From our observations and interviews it seems that most people came to Thunder Bluff to use the auction house.

What is a beginners first reaction to the game World of Warcraft? What is most commonly done first when playing for the first time?
For me observing how John handled his first 5 minutes with the game, i understand that the game must be difficult to figure out.
Qualitative research activity
Submitted by Liu He on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 20:38When my partner was playing the game, he seemed very focused and he was using his left hand to control the spells while using his right hand to control the directions. He was talking to himself and laughing. I asked him what he was doing, he told me his task was to kill darkeye Bonecas to find three blackened skulls.
qualitative research
Submitted by HannahReynolds on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 20:35My research question for this project was what people do when you follow them around in the game. In order to answer this question, I entered the world and followed the first people that I saw. I followed a level six player named Coodle while he was trying to accomplish his task. He killed six rockjaws and never stopped running. He protected us from the first couple rockjaws but we helped with the 4th and 5th. We started following him at 2: 43 and ran after him the whole way but he never answered, even though we continued to laugh at him and get in his way.

Research Quest
Submitted by Scott.Reed on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 15:41At 2:43 pm on April 1,2009 I observed Koodle, a level 31 minion dwarf in the Dun Morgh sever. I followed Koodle and we entered Polridge Pass, a snow covered cave that had high vaulted ceilings in some areas and low ceilings in others, the floor was partially snow partially dark. It seemed Koodle was on a quest for he was killing rock jaws, small troll like animals that had small axes to battle with. Koodle killed two easily in one area of the cave with the battle time being less than 10 seconds for each rock jaw.
observing the harvest watcher killer
Submitted by mattsidran on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 15:40While exploring the starting area, we ran into a much more experienced player (level 14) killing harvest watchers. His screen-name was Moozie. To get a better understanding about the people are behind these avatars, we conducted qualitative research through a short interview to learn more about who he was. Moozie turned out to be an adult, between 22-35 years old. He has been playing since last June. His favorite characters are humans, but his best character is a night-elf druid. On his one account, he was three other characters.
qualitative research
Submitted by jason.wilson on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 15:39After asking numerous players if I could ask them a few questions and being shot down over and over again, I found a nice player in the town of Westfall. I followed him around for a bit while he traveled from farm to farm, killing harvest watchers; probably working on the quest where one had to murder fifteen harvest watchers. He was a level fourteen-nightelf druid, but after speaking with him, I learned that this was only one of his many characters. He had four other characters, only one of which was a horde, but of those four, two of which are level eighties. The last question I asked him was what age group he would place himself in and he told me he was an adult between the ages of 22 and 35.
I have been wondering wither or not I want to change my class or my race and asking him what his favorites were, being such an experienced player helped make my decision easier. His favorite race is human and he said class just depends on what you want to do while you play. He liked my choice of starting off as a warlock, and told me not to change until I get to a higher level and really get to see all I can do with that class. I consider this qualitative research, because I observed and interviewed a player in the game to help me understand more about it.
Auction House Activity and Trends
Submitted by mhopkins on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 15:38The auction house located in Orgrimar on the Dalvengyr server is a place full of constant activity. Frequently players of all races, classes, and levels could be seen inside. Commonly, a player would run up to an auctioneer, and spend a few minutes in front of them, followed by running back outside. After interviewing multiple players we found that a majority or the players that responded were selling items, while a few were simply browsing the selection.

undead warlock
Submitted by wenbo.dou on Tue, 03/31/2009 - 00:08My character is an undead warlock, whose race belongs to the Horde. The undead seek to retain their own free, which they get back from the Lich King; even they were created by him. They are now loyal to their new leader—the banshee queen Sylvanas Windrunner. The labyrinthine Undercity is the main city of them. Their enemies are not only the Lich King, but also Humans, who what to destroy the entire undead race on the land. The undead warlock is a character that is scared by others because of his singular wickedness and cruelty, which we can easily see though his joking.
The Sci Fi Draenei
Submitted by Nick.Deku on Mon, 03/30/2009 - 21:49The Draenei stand out among the other races of World of Warcraft for their more science fiction based lore and appearance than the other more traditional fantasy based races. When I first made a character, I noticed their bluish skin colors reminiscent of western visions of aliens. I then looked at their horns, hooves, and their shinning eyes. All these features seem demonic and would look right at home on a demon itself.
