The Sin'dorei

The blood elves, or Sin’dorei in Thalassian (blood elf speak), are a race composed of former high elves who renamed themselves to honor those who died after King Arthas and his Scourge army slew close to 90% of the total high elf population. With their sunwell destroyed, the new blood elves sought to drain magic from alternative sources to satisfy their need for arcane energy. Their addiction to draining magic corrupted the blood elves, thus they are generally regarded as an evil race. But recently (as in since the start of the Burning Crusade) the blood elves have joined the Horde to reunite with Kael’thas Sunstrider, but once they realized Kael’s true intentions of summoning demon Kil’Jaeden to Azeroth, the blood elves have abandoned him to fight with the Horde. As of the release of Wrath of the Lich King, the sunwell has been restored and thus theoretically has returned the blood elves to a peaceful race among the Horde. Blood elves generally wear lots of red and black, symbolizing their losses from attacks on Quel’thalas, their home. Blood elf architecture is vibrant and containing lots of red and gold, and possesses many elements of Art Nouveau style. Blood elves are symbolized by the phoenix, as the phoenix dies and is reborn, the high elves metaphorically “died off” and were “reborn” as blood elves. The blood elves honor the sun and generally more important blood elves are sometimes referred to as sunstriders. As I have mentioned, blood elves also value arcane energy as they need it to survive. Blood elves also have slim athletic bodies and long pointy ears, different from their night elf counterparts. Blood elves seem to symbolize the youth in this case and are arguably the most aesthetically pleasing race, partially due to their release date into WoW. The male blood elf dance actually derives from Napoleon Dynamite’s dance from popular movie Napoleon Dynamite, linking them to pop culture and the youth. Blood elves speak with a profound voice as compared to the forsaken raspy voice for example, and their laugh sounds more like a menacing cackle, tracing from their evil and corrupt history.
