Race’s Ideologies: Humans
Every character in the MMPORG World of Warcraft has a very different set of ideals, views, and perspectives. The human character in World of Warcraft is the most parallel to human beings in the real world through appearance, stereotypes, mannerisms, and actual events. First, humans in the real world are very similar physically to the humans in World of Warcraft. Since the characters in the game are supposed to be human, it is no surprise they are so comparable. Next, the humans in World of Warcraft seem to stereotypically be reminiscent of real humans. The character I created is a human sage with long blond hair, with a blue dress and a pretty face. Unconsciously, I made my character the stereotypical ideal of beauty in the human culture. Thin and beautiful, she is what our culture strives to attain. While making Jinea, my character, perform commands such as flirting, dancing, and telling jokes, I found more cultural stereotypes. Some jokes Jinea told went as follows: “Me and my girlfriends exchange clothes all the time, we’re all the same size!”, and “I can’t find anywhere to get my nails done.” In popular culture, girls can seem ditzy and give a lot of their attention to material possessions and appearance. These “jokes” reflect the way the characters view their world and their cultural relationship to humans outside of the game. Also, the mannerisms portrayed by the human character in World of Warcraft correspond to human beings. The manner in which Jinea flirted with other characters through laughing and giggling made me think of Jinea more as an actual human than a human in a game world. The way Jinea presents herself in certain situations reminds me more of people I know than a fictional character. Finally, the history and present state of the human race is extremely similar to the history of humans, specifically in the case of the United States. In the paragraph giving pertinent information about humans while creating a character for WoW, it is stated that humans have, “built some of the world’s greatest kingdoms,” is in an era of conflict, and is trying to “rekindle their glory.” The United States has been known worldwide for being a leader in many different areas of living. We have built some of the greatest cities in the world, including New York City and Los Angeles. At this current time, we are going through a recession and have been involved in war (an era of conflict), and we are trying to get back to a time of prosperity as seen in our past (rekindle our glory.) All in all, the human race in the World of Warcraft videogame is deeply correlated with human beings in the real world.
