World of Warcraft Character Synopsis

Night Elf Death Knight

My current World of Warcraft character is a level 65 Night Elf Death Knight in the Borean Tundra realm.  Death knights are very different from most of the other classes in The World of Warcraft because I consider them to be a new species and not just a class.  This is because Death Knights are an undead hero class in which the characters were raised from the dead by the Lich King they are seen as having no morals and will kill anyone who gets in their way.  Because of this Night Elf Death Knights are very different from the normal peace loving Night Elves that we are all so use to.  As a result of the Lich Kings teachings death knights are nothing but undead killing machines that do not care about morality however once the lich king is driven from Acherus: The Ebon Hold death knights were somewhat reborn and given more morals by the game designers.

Death knights are known as a hero class which means that they start at level 55 and are well versed in tanking(defense) and DPS(offense).  My current talents are as an unholy death knight who specializes in doing damage with diseases and summoning undead minions to fight alongside me and a frost death knight who specializes in offense and fast strikes giving him a high DPS rating.  I mostly use the unholy death knight for singlplayer missions because it has the most flexibility while I use the frost death knight for the combat role in dungeons and raids.

Because of the Lich Kings teachings Death Knights are seen as the enemy of both the Horde and Alliance alike.  However after the Lich King is defeated and driven from power the player can join their races coalition in either the Horde or Alliance.  As a result of this Death Knights are now seen as allies to the people who once called them enemies since they all have the same goal of destroying the Lich King.

When asking “which students by Major choice have the most consistently high level characters in World of Warcraft” one can construct the graph from the survey data shown to the right.  This shows that those with an Undecided Major have highest average level (N=36, n=3, M=70.00)based on major. However, this data should be questioned as there is only 3 students with this Major selection in this surveyed. However, taking into account a larger amount of students, it is important to note that Students English major have the second highest average level with (n=9, M=63.222), followed by Biology (n=2, M=63). A possible explanation is that English courses are centered around large papers that are worked on throughout quarter  or semester. This setup allows for a more consistent free time for these students, meaning they can consistently get in more time playing WoW leading to more levels being achieved.

English Majors really like the WoW apparently.

Based on the research question: Are college students who play WoW able to prioritize their school work with their play time? After conducting survey research we constructed a bar chart that compared majors to How important is GAMING to your happiness (1 not important, 7 most important). Based on the research we have found that English majors, Computer Science majors, and people who are Undecided find gaming to contribute to their happiness moreso than others. This can be concluded by identifying in the research that all three of these types of “majors” scored gaming to happiness an average of 5 (out of 7) which was the highest of all the other majors (M, 2012).

When looking at if there is a connection between the importance of gaming to college student’s happyness with their commitment to their World of Warcraft characters, we found that there wasn’t a big correlation between them. There is a slight increase in levels as the importance of gaming increases, players whose gaming importance ranked 3 had lower average levels (M=43.88,SD=23.21,N=36,n=8), then players whose gaming importance ranked 4 (M=54.00,SD=12.98,N=36,n=5) had lower average levels than those who said that gaming importance was ranked at 5 (M=65.25,SD=13.58,N=36,n=20). There were so few players who ranked at 1 (M=5,SD=0,N=36,n=2) and 2 (M=60,SD=0,N=36,n=1) to consider them in our results. Dispite these findings, the standard deviations are so large, that it makes the results negligable.

We decided to determine whether or not there was a correlation between age of the player and class played. We theorized that older players would play caster classes, or healer classes. However the results showed very little correlation between the two. There were three classes with a significant age difference. Two of the classes had only one player to gather data from, though the third (Warlock) happened to have a higher age of player, as well as a solid data group. In our experience, we have found that Warlocks are a more tedious class to play; this could be responsible for the spike in age found in Warlock players. This leads us to believe that there is little correlation between age and class except with particularly difficult or tedious classes.

Based on our research question, “Does character level in WoW correlate with your perspective college major?” we found that Undecided majors (N=36, n=3, M=75.00, SD=8.66) obtained the highest level out of all the other majors closely followed by mass communication (N=36, n=6, M=69.67, SD=8.24) and computer science (N=36, n=3, M=63.33, SD=4.16).  The Undecided majors have the highest average WoW level because they take all common curriculum classes that typically require less work therefore allowing them more time to focus on WoW and not schoolwork.
